About IBS

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a common condition of the digestive system with symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating or change in bowel habit. Unfortunately it is not fully understood. It's a functional bowel disorder for sure, however there is no organic cause. That's why it can be quite hard to recognise and diagnose.

Most common symptoms:
  • abdominal pain
  • cramping
  • bloating
  • diarrhoea or constipation.

There is no cure for irritable bowel syndrome but symptoms can be managed. Although it may be difficult to control because it affects every patient differently. Symptoms can be worse for a few weeks or months for instance, after that they may improve or disappear for an undefined period of time. The length of these periods can vary from person to person and can be affected by diet or lifestyle as well.
It is interesting to know that the triggers can also vary in each case, so everyone has to figure out what kind of food may affect their conditions for themselves.
IBS is not a harmful condition, however it may make the patient's life more difficult than one would think. It can easily affect the quality of life by influencing the person's social or even sex life.

There are general factors that can help with reducing the symptoms of IBS.
  • Eat smaller portions but more frequent (5-6 times a day). It means you should have breakfast, dinner, supper and some snacks between them.
  • Eat enough fruits and vegetables and food with high fiber content.
  • Drink lots of water, at least 6-8 glasses.
  • You should avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Exercise regularly.
Of course keeping these rules doesn't mean it exempts you from medical check-ups. If you are suspicious about having IBS, visit your GP.
